OPEN TO ALL FEMALE STUDENTS AGE 10 TO 17

Highlight 2024

Girlscode is a virtual mobile app challenge open to female students only

Empower pre-teens and teens to take actions and solve community problems that efects their life now and the future, including sub-urban and rural schools

Develop pre-teens and teens skills in Design Thinking, Coding, Entrepreneurship and Pitching

Increase female participation and interest in STEM related field

Girlscode is Sarawak’s homegrown unique STEM program. The challenge consists of two categories:

  • Junior Category (10 – 12 years old)
  • Senior Category (13 – 17 years old)

Participants form groups to solve community problems through creating mobile apps.

For Senior groups, students are required to prepare a business plan for the mobile app “business”. Students will undergo learning/workshop on topics: Problem and Solution, App Development, Pitching & Business Plan.

Only Top 6 from each category will be selected as finalists. All finalists required to travel to final location (Sarawak).

*All activities will be done through a mix of virtual and physical activities.

Problem Identification and Solutioning

  • All teams find a problem in their community that they want to focus on, and choose the best mobile app solution that can address the problem.
  • Online materials will be provided to guide the students on their submission.
  • Online workshops will be organised (Saturday 9am to 12pm) to provide additional assistance to new participants. (Workshop date will be announced later, but will be within the stage 1 period)
  • Workshop content includes:
    – Brainstorming
    – Idea selection & validation
    – Rapid prototyping tool
    – Minimal viable product
  • At the end of Stage 1, all teams required to submit:
    – 100 words description of the problem and their solution
    – Prioritise list of features and what is considered their minimal viable product (MVP)
    – Paper Prototype
    – Learning journey with photos
    – 3 minutes presentation video
  • Submission date: 6 September 2024
  • Result announcement: 13 September 2024
  • Total 30 teams from Junior and 30 teams from Senior will be selected to proceed to Semi Final.
  • Teams (including teacher/mentor) successfully completed all the required items in Stage 1 will be given Certificate of Participation.

App Development

  • Teams turn their idea into actual mobile app. They will reach out to other users to test the app, get feedback and improve it over time.
  • Teams need to record a 3 minutes video, showing how their mobile app work.
  • For senior category, teams need to do market research, and identify what’s the uniqueness of their app compare to those in the market.
  • Online materials will be provided to guide the students on their app development.
  • Online workshops will be organised (Saturday 9am to 12pm) to provide additional assistance to new participants. (Workshop date will be announced later, but will be within the stage 2 period)
  • Workshop content includes:
    – Using MIT App Inventor development tool
    – Creating technical video
    – Unique Selling Point (Senior only)
  • At the end of Stage 2, all teams are required to submit:
    – 3 minutes technical video
    – Working Mobile App source code
    – User feedback documentation
    – Market research & Unique Selling Point (Senior only)
    – Learning Journey with photos
  • Submission date: 30 October 2024
  • Result announcement: 4 November 2024
  • Total 6 Junior and 6 senior teams will be selected to proceed to Final.
04 November – 23 November

Final Presentation & Poster

  • Teams will turn put all their hard work into presentation video and poster to document their success.
  • Finalist teams will be invited to final physical presentation session as well as closing & award ceremony, tentatively set on 22 & 23 November 2024, in Sarawak.
  • All finalists are required to travel to participate in the physical session. Travel allowance will be partially subsidised by organiser.
  • All finalist projects will be nominated to compete at international level (Technovation Challenge 2024/2025 season).
  • Online materials will be provided to guide the students on video presentation creation.
  • Submission Date: 15 November 2024

FAQs

Yes, you need to form a team. The team will need to consist of minimum 2 or maximum 5 students + 1 teacher/mentor.

Yes, your team can be from different location. However, they all must be from one of the schools in Malaysia.

Yes, as long as the school is in Malaysia. Public, private and International school are all welcome to participate and form a team. However, for private and International school student, each student requires to pay RM80 for registration.

Yes, as long as they are within the same category (Junior: 10-12 years old), (Senior: 13-17 years old).

Yes, online workshop and online courses will be provided through learning management system to prepare you for the competition.

Competition and online courses will mainly in English, and team’s final presentation will also need to be delivered in English.

You can use MIT App Inventor or Thunkable to make mobile apps.
